DC Studios and Warner Bros Pictures Animation have delighted fans with the announcement of a new Batman-related spin-off, Dynamic Duo.

The animated film, now in production, will explore the origin stories of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, both known to comic book enthusiasts as Robin, Batman’s sidekick.

While some narratives see Grayson evolve into Nightwing and Todd become Red Hood, it remains unclear whether these narratives will feature in the upcoming movie.

Matthew Aldrich, who previously wrote Pixar’s Coco and Lightyear, is set to pen the script for Dynamic Duo.

Following the announcement, fans have been circulating a demo reel from Swaybox, the New Orleans-based studio tasked with leading the animation for the project, reports .

The one-minute compilation showcases a variety of animated characters and scenes, demonstrating the diverse styles at the disposal of the husband-and-wife team behind Swaybox, Arthur Mintz and Theresa Andersson.

Mintz is slated to direct the new film and according to Deadline, Swaybox employs a technology known as Momo animation, which merges CGI, stop motion elements, and live-action performance.

The footage offers a tantalising peek into an innovative direction for animation, leaving many Batman enthusiasts buzzing with anticipation. It’s widely believed that this fresh take could stand toe-to-toe with Marvel and Sony’s acclaimed Spiderverse series.

Expressing their excitement, one adoring fan took to X, previously known as Twitter, to exclaim: “Their style is so unique we are actually getting the coolest DC project ever.”

Another fan voiced optimism over the film’s prospects, regardless of it being outside the upcoming DC cinematic universe anticipated to kick off with James Gunn’s Superman Legacy.

They remarked: “While I hate that this is another movie that wont be part of the DCU, I think this has potential to be a top notch animated film like Spiderverse.”

Echoing these sentiments, another fan considered the collaborative effort between Matt Reeves and James Gunn on the project, who will serve as producers, an encouraging sign. They commented: “Considering this project has both Matt Reeves and James Gunn working on it, this gives me a lot of hope. While it is extremely out there, might be a good thing. Spider verse was initially thought to be way out there too and look at how that worked out.”

Meanwhile, The Penguin’s opening episode amassed an impressive viewership exceeding 5 million globally, yet it’s worth noting that Dynamic Duo will not align with the HBO series nor fit within Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe narrative.
