Antiques Roadshow expert Wayne Colquhoun was left stunned when he was presented with a piece of ‘history’ on the hit One show.

The roadshow headed to Alexandra Gardens in Cardiff in the episode, where the experts were presented with numerous interesting items including unseen photographs of The Rolling Stones, a repurposed piece of silver jewellery from India and a collection of medals dating back to the Napoleonic War.

Wayne met with a woman who possessed numerous football items, which immediately caught the attention of the Liverpool-born antiques expert. The guest’s memorabilia collection included badges, uniforms, photographs and more.

She explained that her father, Iorweth Jones, was a football referee. He was the referee at the famous 1973 match between Liverpool FC and Leicester City.

She presented Wayne with a programme from the match, which is rembered as being controversial because the referee disallowed a goal for Leicester City, resulting in the game ending 0-0.

As he looked at the programme, Wayne said: “This is quite a famous match in my memory: Liverpool versus Leicester City 1973. It was a bit of a controversial match as well, wasn’t it?”

The woman also presented Wayne with a football covered in signatures, including Bill Shankly. Wayne was impressed by the signed ball and was keen to take it home with him.

He said: “I was there so I probably shouted a few names at your father. That’s etched in my memory because Liverpool won the league but what I really remember it for was my hero, Bill Shankly, who signed this ball- when they won it, took his jacket off and he had his red shirt on. The whole crowd went mad. So your father is a piece of my history as well. Can I have this ball? Can I keep this ball?”

He jokingly tried to put it under his blazer as the guest laughed with him.

Wayne then revealed his valuation for the collection of football items, leaving the woman stunned. He told her was “pleased” she’d joined Antiques Roadshow and felt the items were a part of “cultural history”.

“I’m so pleased you brought it along today. The collection is far too vast to put out today, but as a rough valuation, there’s £1,000 worth of merchandise there,” Wayne told her. “But, to me, it’s a bit of cultural history and our viewers might even remember your father.”

Antiques Roadshow is available to watch on One and iPlayer.
