A pay-per-mile tax system would charge drivers based on how far they travel
The money-saving community has advised drivers of a simple tool that could help them cut down their motoring bills if a is introduced.
With Prime Minister warning that the will be ‘painful’, a number of driving experts are predicting that a will be introduced.
To avoid a sharp rise in the cost of taxing a vehicle, Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, recommended that drivers consider ways to make their journeys shorter.
He advised: “If this pay-per-mile tax comes into force, we’re all going to have to become like Amazon delivery drivers with super smart routing.
“There’s a free online tool called MapQuest, where if you go to Route Planner you can enter multiple destinations and it’ll tell you the shortest way.”

Found on most new cars, GPS systems often allow drivers to specify the shortest possible route
Since a pay-per-mile tax system would charge motorists a unique figure based on the distance they travel in their car during the year, long-distance trips to see loved ones could become particularly pricey.
To keep the cost down, experts have suggested that drivers avoid taking unnecessarily long or scenic journeys that could drive up the cost of taxing a car.
One of the easiest ways to do this is by entering the desired destination into a GPS service, with many of the most popular featuring multiple choices, letting users choose the route with the shortest distance.

Tom also highlighted that there are services that will track drivers and share suggestions that can help them reduce their mileage, but warned that even with these methods, a pay-per-mile tax system could penalise those who depend on their car.
He added: “Mileage tracking apps like MileIQ or TripLog monitor your driving habits and identify ways for you to reduce your miles.
“But the problem is, this is way beyond the skill set of many people, and the tax will punish those that have no alternative.”
