As overtourism continues to plague most countries, finding a region less traveled is high on most people’s travel itinerary.

Finding a spot that encapsulates not only pristine beaches but also poetic landscapes and less tourists is a hot topic.

has long been favoured by the intrepid traveller but this little town is far less crowded than the likes of Crete, Corfu or Santorini.

The seaside getaway promises history, beautiful walks and traditional buildings with mouth-watering foods to suit all.

This is why it deserves a spot on your next Greek getaway, making it a hidden gem like no other.

Preveza is found northwest of Greece and is mostly untouched by tourists, making it the perfect European getaway.

The region is near the northern peninsula of the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf in Western Greece.

This coastal city boasts a relaxing vibe with harbours, promenades, a seaside pedestrian walkway and slab-paved backstreets.

Best of all, its far quieter than many other coastal regions in Greece with a number of small beaches easily located and a host of enjoyable activities and attractions to enjoy.

Preveza was built on the site of the ancient Vereniki town founded by the Greek King of Epirus in 290 BC.

The town was conquered countless times before it became officially part of in 1912.

Fresh seafood, tantalising flavours and hearty dishes are plenty in this region with popular dishes including Caramote prawns and Petali (sea bream) which are brought in by boats arriving every morning at Aktia Gorgona at the Preveza’s quay.

For those less enthused by seafood, Preveza is famed for its generous pies including Mplatsara and a milk custard pie known as Galatopita.

Also on offer is homemade ice cream which can all be washed down with the regions local alcohol like ouzo and tsipouro.

When it comes to activities, history is at its core with the Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis, St. Varnavas Church, Fortress of Pantocrator, the Castle of Saint Andrew, Fortress of Reniassa, Ottoman baths of Ali Pasha Tepelena, all being a must-see.

Preveza walking tours, dolphin watching cruises, Acheron Delta Kayaking Eco Tours or swimming at Alonaki beach are all available to be enjoyed for the outdoor lovers.

Despite Preveza being mostly untouched by mass tourism, you can still expect a pleasant buzz in this region with a relaxing nightlife.
