Israel launches devastating airstrikes on Houthis as Middle East war widens

Israel has carried out airstrikes against the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen – the country’s military has confirmed.

The Israeli Defence Force said targets including a seaport and power plants had been targeted.

Footage shows flame and smoke rising from an apparent strike in Hodeidah, , on Sunday.

The strike comes after air raid sirens sounded across central on Saturday afternoon, including at the Tel Aviv international airport, after fired a missile towards the country.

The Houthis , with the IDF saying it had been successfully intercepted.

An IDF spokesperson said: “The IAF [Israeli Air Force] struck military targets belonging to the Houthi terrorist regime in Yemen in response to their recent attacks against .

“The targets included power plants and a seaport, which were used by the Houthis to transfer weapons to the region, in addition to military supplies and oil.

“Over the past year, the Houthis have been operating under the direction and funding of Iran, and in cooperation with Iraqi militias, in order to attack the State of , undermine regional stability, and disrupt global freedom of navigation.

“The IDF is determined to continue operating at any distance – near or far – against all threats to the citizens of the State of .”

The Houthis have launched a number of missiles and drones towards since the start of the -Hamas war following the October 7 attack on .

The Houthis have also targeted ships navigating the Red Sea, threatening trade routes and seeing countries including the US and UK launch air strikes against the militants.

Israeli has previously launched an air strike against the Houthis after an earlier attack.

The latest air strikes comes amidst an escalating conflict between and , another Iranian-backed militia based in Lebanon.

On Friday, an Israeli air strike killed Hassan Nasrallah, the man who led Hezbollah for 32 years following a series of strikes last week that saw pagers and other devices explode across Lebanon.
