What sets Whitstable apart is its almost cult-like obsession with actor Peter Cushing, according to  Reporter Adam Toms

The town is well-known for its beautiful beaches and fresh seafood, but for Toms, the town’s unusual tribute to the famous actor was what stood out.

Toms decided to visit Whitstable instead of the more obvious choice of Brighton for a weekend break.

His journey from took just over an hour and a half, and he arrived at a bustling filled with independent shops and cafes.

“It was great to see the town so lively,” said Toms. “But I did notice a few closed shops, including a cafe and fish and chip shop, which you wouldn’t expect in a seaside town.”

Like many , Whitstable has struggled with the effects of the pandemic, but there was still plenty for Toms to enjoy.

He described having “the best scotch egg I’ve ever had” from Polly’s Handmade Pies, followed by a hearty ham, cheese, and chutney sandwich at the Whitstable Produce Store.

However, what caught his attention was the town’s dedication to Peter Cushing, who lived there for many years.

The Whitstable Museum has a whole section devoted to the Star Wars and star, featuring quirky items like a Dalek and a mummy with googly eyes.

“It felt a bit like a cult,” Toms said. “You could tell how much the town loves him. There are references to Cushing everywhere.”

Even the local Wetherspoons pub is named after him. By the end of the trip, Toms admitted he was “thoroughly Cushinged out” after seeing so many tributes to the actor.

While Whitstable has all the charm of a traditional British seaside town, its almost fanatical admiration for Peter Cushing gives it a unique character that visitors won’t find anywhere else.
