Homes Under the Hammer host horrified as couple ‘break golden rule’ in £1m move

In a jaw-dropping instalment of host Martel Maxwell was visibly taken aback as the show revealed Doug and his wife Sophie’s bold move.

The property-savvy pair, with Doug wielding expertise as a developer, joiner, and builder, opted to snatch up a Brixton four-bedder.

The South London gem, making its auction debut on the platform, sported a tempting tag of £668,000.

Yet, Doug didn’t hold back, shelling out an eye-watering £908,000 for the property to craft a nest for him and Sophie, upgrading from their compact one-bedroom flat. Chatting with Martel, Doug exuded zero buyer’s remorse.

Brushing off any doubts, he cheerfully told the bewildered presenter: “We’re going to move in here, a bit of an upgrade from the one-bedroom flat we’re in at the moment.”, reports .

Martel, however, couldn’t mask her astonishment at the hefty figure, probing further into the purchase. She quizzed: “I’m guessing you’d viewed it and really knew that you wanted it to commit that amount of money?”.

Yet Doug dropped a bombshell: “We hadn’t viewed it. We viewed it from the outside! I only knew about it the day before the auction,” he confessed.

Adding with a shrug, “I definitely wouldn’t recommend not viewing it but…” Incredulously, she responded: “It’s funny isn’t it, committing almost £1m without seeing it..”

Despite uncovering some unexpected roof leaks, Doug’s contentment with the home seemed undiminished.

While discussing his various jobs, mentioned that it’s not easy to ruffle his feathers. The presenter pointed out that the couple had taken a ‘monumental risk’ by purchasing a property sight unseen.

Martel chimed in: “And nearly a million quid, I think that’s the most egregious breaking of our Hammer golden rule yet.”

After moving into their Victorian abode amidst renovations, which Doug largely undertook himself, they spent approximately £75,000 and a year and a half on refurbishments.

Their efforts were fruitful as an estate agent valued the house at a whopping £1.5m. Yet, Doug admitted they’re contemplating selling due to “changes in working from home”.
