I get asked lots of questions about spring bulbs, so thought I would give you my answers to the most frequently asked ones.

How deep do we plant spring bulbs? The general rule of thumb is to measure the bulb top to bottom and then plant it three times the depth of that measurement.

This can be approximate so don’t worry too much. That means smaller bulbs are in shallow holes compared to larger bulbs.

What sort of soil and compost conditions do they prefer? Spring bulbs want to be in free draining pots and soils.

They do not want to be in permanently soaked composts and soils as they will rot. The pots must have holes and the ground must have natural drainage.

How much sunlight do they need? Most spring bulbs want as much sun as possible.

When planting spring bulbs try and plant into spaces and places where the sun shines from late February and beyond. The more sun spring bulbs get the better they will grow and flower.

The wildlife digs up my spring bulbs, what can I do? I suggest you place nets over your pots and grounded planted bulbs until the green shoots show themselves.

The netting can be placed over to create a cover of that area. That will hopefully lead to a successful floral outcome in springtime.
