Europe’s steepest street so dangerous to drive up it’s closed for eight months a year

Stalheimskleiva is the steepest road in and has gained a reputation for adventurers looking for a unique experience.

Located in , the road spans two miles and has 13 extreme bends which are dangerous for drivers.

Known as the  “Stalheimskleiva Switchbacks,” the road is a breathtaking feat of engineering that winds its way through the Nærpydalen Valley near the village of Stalheim.

The road cannot be used from late October through to June as winter conditions mean driving the road is too unsafe. It was originally built to facilitate access to the Stalheim Hotel and was completed in the 19th century.

Despite the danger associated with the journey, the road is no stranger to tourists. So much so, local authorities have had to put measures in place to ensure the safety of travellers who may be less familiar with the dangers of this route.

Tourism officials in the region highlight the importance of on Stalheimskleiva, reminding visitors to exercise caution and adhere to the posted speed limits.

Additionally, they recommend checking weather conditions before embarking on the journey, as the road can be particularly hazardous during inclement weather.
