Bruno Fernandes has revealed what James Maddison told him as he walked off the pitch after receiving his marching orders in ‘s chastening defeat to .

The Red Devils endured a horror afternoon at Old Trafford, with Brennan Johnson putting Spurs ahead inside just three minutes as the visitors dominated the early proceedings.

Then things went from bad to worse as Fernandes was shown a straight red for lunging at James Maddison’s knee, although he clearly slipped just moments before the tackle. The Utd captain was left in dismay at the red card, and he has now shared what the playmaker told him.

Fernandes fronted up to Sky Sports after the final whistle, and was very honest as he said he ‘let my team-mates down’. However, he still doesn’t believe he should have been sent off for the challenge.

He said: “I don’t think anyone wants to see it, I don’t go in with my studs, I take it with my ankle. It’s a clear foul but never a red card.

“That’s my feeling and that’s what Maddison – when he gets up – you can see the image… he just said he never thought it was a red card. For everyone, you can see it’s not a red card. If we say this is a red card, then we have to take a look at many other incidents and I had many incidents when I get kicked.

“But I never witnessed something so quick coming up as a red card, I just think it’s never a red card. If he wants to give a yellow because it’s a counter-attack, but I don’t understand why they didn’t call the referee to the [VAR] screen.”

After Fernandes’ red, there was only going to be one winner going into the second-half. And quickly doubled their lead minutes into the last 45 as Dejan Kulusevski produced a fine finish.
