According to RED Driver Training, 37 percent of learner drivers who have retaken their theory test did so because two years have elapsed since they first passed.
With demand for driving tests often high, many students could simply be timed out in a major blow.
The poll found the leading reason for allowing a theory test to expire was down to simply running out of money to afford driving lessons (15 percent).
This was followed by repeatedly failing a driving test over the set period with 14 percent of individuals caught out.
A lack of driving instructors affected 13 percent of road users while 10 percent struggled to find a driving test in the required time.

He added: “This is compounded by the fact that students must retake their theory test once two years have elapsed since first passing a theory test, and a lack of driving instructors and long wait times for tests are contributing.
