Autumn maintenance is extremely important, especially when looking to keep the lawn healthy all year round.

Performing maintenance on your grass in September and October can help the blades of grass stay healthy as well as keep it weed-free.

However, it can be hard to know how often to cut grass as well as the best time of day to do so, which can all make a huge difference.

According to Lucy Rhead, a enthusiast at , the best time of the day is in the morning.

The expert said: “The best time to cut your grass in autumn is in the mid-to-late morning.

“The idea is to avoid cutting it too early when the morning dew makes the grass wet, but not too late in the evening either.

“This is because the grass needs time to recover before the nighttime chill sets in.”

The good news is that because grass growth slows down in autumn, gardeners don’t need to cut their lawns as often.

It’s recommended to cut fortnightly, rather than once a week, to keep the lawn in the “best condition”. Just make sure you raise the blades to 4cm for a “nice and neat finish”.

It’s also important to tackle any weeds in the autumn months as they can quickly take over the lawn, leaving it looking worse for wear.

The expert recommended popping a bit of weed killer on any sprouting weeds, just make sure to never do this if it is frozen over.

Lucy also advised against walking on the lawn when it is frozen as this may leave brown marks on the grass.

It’s best to avoid doing anything to the garden when it’s frozen over, including cutting the lawn, spraying fertiliser or “anything of the sort”.

This not only can damage the grass but stunt its growth altogether for future seasons. She added: “Choosing the best lawnmower for your garden is also important.

“For instance, if you find your garden is too big for the wire of the lawnmower to stretch across, or you’re looking for an eco-friendly option, then a cordless lawnmower could be the one for you.

“So, cold weather might give you a bit more to think about when it comes to tending your lawn, but it definitely doesn’t mean you need to wait until the weather heats up to keep your garden lush and healthy.”
