The UK’s most remote pub that takes a three-day walk to get there

Many people have a local pub that is an easy walk from their home – or a particular favourite that is easy enough to get to for a quick meal and a pint with friends.

However, one in Scotland has only a few dedicated locals and a long journey for anyone else hoping to pop in for a pint.

The Old Forge in Inverie claims to be the most remote pub on the UK mainland.

Inverie, located on a sea loch on the Knoydart Peninsula on the west coast of the Scottish Highlands, is not linked to the rest of the country by road – with only a few single-track roads surrounding the village.

Instead, people are faced with two options if they hope to get to the pub.

The first option is the seven-mile ferry crossing from the port at Mallaig, which itself is a three-and-a-half hour drive from Glasgow or a train of almost five hours at least.

The second option is an 18-mile hike across the Scottish highlands, which takes several days due to the terrain.

There are a few bothys (basic cabins offering bunks and shelter) along the route.

However, crossing the last great wilderness in Scotland is not a trek taken on likely, earlier this month former paratrooper Paul Conway was found “in good spirits” almost a week after going missing while making his way to the Old Forge.

The pub itself was taken over by the local community in 2022 and was closed for renovation between March and August 2023 – with many of the 170 or so people who live in the area having a share in the Old Forge.

As you’d expect, the pub boasts a range of draught beers as well as craft beers as well as spirits, whisky and soft drinks among other options.

There’s also food with both lunch and dinner options, including classics such as fish and chips as well as local specialities like Knoydart venison and fresh seafood.

The Old Forge has no accommodation itself, and the final ferry of the day leaves at 6.30pm, so anyone who wants to stay until last orders will need to make sure they’ve found other accommodations in the area.
