The M40 is shut to traffic in Warwickshire following a ‘serious’ crash on the northbound carriageway tonight (Saturday, September 28).
The closure was first reported at around 8pm and a diversion route is in place. Warwickshire Police are in attendance.
A National Highways spokesperson said: “The M40 in Warwickshire is closed northbound between J11 and J12 due to a serious collision. Warwickshire Police and emergency services are currently in attendance.
“If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”

Affected stretch of motorway
The northbound carriageway is shut to traffic between Junction 11 (Banbury) and Junction 12 (Gaydon). A number of vehicles are involved in the incident.

Some traffic trapped within closure
Some traffic is reported to be trapped in the closure. The northbound carriageway is shut.
Inrix, the traffic data company, said:
M40 Northbound closed due to serious multi-vehicle accident between J11 A422 (Banbury) and J12 B4451 Gaydon Road (Gaydon).”
Police advise drivers to avoid the area
Police and other emergency services are at the scene tonight. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area as a result of the incident.
A Warwickshire Police spokesperson said:
We’re at a serious multi-vehicle collision on the northbound side of the M40. All three lanes from junction 11 (Banbury) to junction 12 (Gaydon) are closed while a lane is also shut on the southbound side. Please avoid the area and follow diversions where possible.”
Diversion route
National Highways says a diversion route is in place. Motorists are being urged to follow the Hollow Circle diversion symbol on road signs.
Diversion route:
Exit the M40 at J11 then take the B430
Continue along the N430 then at the 5th roundabout take the exit for the B4100
Continue along the B4100 (northbound) then take the B4451
Take the B4451 and continue until you re-join the M40 at J12.
