In his column, Eden said: “There has been speculation about a potential return to some royal duties for . However, at New York Climate Week all the talk was about a bigger role in ‘The Firm’ for one of his cousins, who was in the city, too.”

He added: “King Charles is said to see no role as working royals for his nieces, but there have been signs that could see the value in leaning on his cousins when he eventually ascends the throne.”

Their mum, Sarah Ferguson, told Richard that “they are extraordinary at what they do”. “I always brought them up that if you feel bad about yourself, give to others and then you’ll feel better,” she added.

A source told “Beatrice and Eugenie are extremely popular with the public so it makes sense for the Royal Family to utilise that popularity. There were many discussions over the summer [Balmoral summit] about using Beatrice and Eugenie more at public facing events.

“The sisters will not be elevated to working royal status but they will step up in an unofficial capacity to support the family when needed and become more involved with causes close to their hearts.”

An insider previously claimed the York sisters would be unlikely to take up roles as working royals because they both have their own careers and charity interests. Beatrice is the Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at US tech company, Afiniti, while Eugenie is art director at Hauser & Wirth.

Speaking on behalf of Fruity Slots, former royal butler Grant Harrold said: “Eugenie is probably cautious to step up to Royal duties because it does take up your whole life. I’ve seen the schedules and you can’t switch it on and off.

“Eugenie is very keen to have her own career and that’s something she is very passionate about – so yes, she probably is reluctant to take on Royal duties.”
