Huge anti-tourism protests made global headlines in April this year
Protesters have revealed the exact date they plan to as the campaign to limit the number of people visiting the Canary Islands ramps up.
Citizens of the Spanish Archipelago have been urged to take to the streets like they did in April, when in the capital, in a press release from the organisers of the previous massive event.
“We are flooding the streets once again,” the release explains, “this time, in the tourist south of Tenerife.
“Five months have passed since the historic demonstrations of April 20, and political parties and institutions, far from addressing social demands or showing any sign of understanding the grave problem we face, continue to advocate for a predatory tourism model.”
Although the previous demonstrations were of considerable scale, the impact felt by visitors to Tenerife was relatively limited as they took place in the north of the island which has fewer holidaymakers than the south.
Demonstrators will come face to face with the island’s many tourists
However, on October 20, 2024 protesters will descend on the Playa de Las Americas area dominated by tourists and hotels.
British holidaymakers will come face to face with demonstrators who last time carried banners with slogans such as “Tourism is killing the Canary Islands” and believe the influx of outsiders has and is .
The move to bring the fight directly to the neighbourhoods reliant on tourists is a significant shift in approach. Organisers have continually insisted they are not against people coming to Tenerife, but want to make life more affordable for local people as the spirals out of control.
The Playa de las Americas protest will not be the last as organisers have vowed to keep fighting.

Protesters have vowed to keep fighting as they take demonstrations to tourist areas
“We have not stopped, nor will we. We ask all those who are concerned about the harm being inflicted on our land to take to the streets en masse on October 20, to once again make history, and to make it clear that this has only just begun,” the press release continued.
“Every new project, every golf course, every hotel, every attack on our nature will make our numbers grow as we fight and transform the pain we feel into the powerful fuel that drives us to keep struggling.
“Our protests will only intensify if immediate measures are not taken to halt the profound environmental and social deterioration that the Canary Islands are experiencing. In just three weeks, the streets of the Canary Islands will roar with our voice once more.”
The demonstration is scheduled to begin at 12pm from the Metrópolis Centre, Las Américas. Tenerife.
