Mould is in around a quarter of UK homes
According to recent statistics, a third of the population experience damp and excessive cold, and as a result, , in their homes.
It can do more than just damage property. If not addressed, mould can also lead to various complications, such as respiratory issues and allergies.
Thankfully, home living experts at Vonhaus have compiled a list of that will help you combat mould, including a surprising 99p item that can make a world of difference.
However, it’s important to understand what causes mould. Emily Caloe, a senior buyer at Vonhaus, said: “Damp, humid environments are just the right breeding grounds for mould.
“This is compounded by poor ventilation, leaks, condensation and high humidity levels that all create the perfect breeding ground for mould spores, which can affect walls, ceilings, windows and other surfaces with unsightly stains and possible health hazards”.

What is the 99p hack?
Want something easy to make and will barely cost you any money? Look no further than a product probably sitting in your bathroom—shaving foam.
This common product will surely help in keeping the mould away from windows and costs less than a pound.
Caloe added: “Start by giving your windows a good clean. Spread a thin layer of shaving cream over the glass; this shaving cream will act as a barrier, reducing condensation—a major cause of mould growth on windows.
“Let the foam sit for a few minutes until the excess is wiped off, and then let it sit with a thin, clear layer left behind.

“Alternatively, white distilled vinegar, use can the cheapest brand from the supermarket, will also help remove mould and kill its spores. Mix one part vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle and apply the solution to the affected area.
“Wipe down with a clean, damp cloth. If there is a smell of vinegar, don’t worry—it will disappear within a few hours. And remember: always wear gloves and a mask when dealing with mould.”
Manage and track humidity
While shaving foam does a nice job on windows, a dehumidifier is what really makes the difference in managing the general level of humidity within your home – the biggest cause of mould.
To get the most out of a dehumidifier, ensure that its size corresponds to the space you need to dehumidify.
Place it on the floor in damp-prone places like basements, bathrooms, or kitchens. Make sure you regularly empty the water tank and clean the filter to keep it running efficiently.
Ensure good ventilation and dry surfaces
Install and activate exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom to clear any steam and moisture. Whenever possible, open some windows and let fresh air in. Consider installing vents in rooms if these rooms have no other natural source of ventilation.
Keeping surfaces dry is key to preventing mould
Make sure you’re wiping down any moisture in the kitchen and bathroom after cooking or showering. Think of placing absorbent mats in areas prone to water splashes, like near sinks and tubs.
Last but not least, try to avoid drying clothes indoors, but if you need to, use a dryer or ensure the room is well-ventilated.
Make sure you address any leaks quickly, as leaks from pipes, roofs, or windows can introduce moisture into your home, creating an ideal environment for mould to grow.
Mould is one of the most common but very destructive issues that can do immense harm to both your home and your health if it is not addressed.
You can manage mould in your home effectively with a few simple hacks, however, focusing on proper ventilation, fast leak repair, surface dryness, and a regular cleaning schedule creates an environment where mould will least likely thrive.
